The Guides

The Head Guides at the Lodge are Michael Benton and David Taat.

Michael was born and bred in the Territory, and has spent most of his life at Pirlangimpi. Until quite recently he was in charge of the Local and quite rightly famous Pirlangimpi Bakery, which distributes daily bread across the settlements of the Tiwi People. Michael is married, has three children who attend the local school, and is deeply involved in the community at a grass roots level.

Michael's wife Kerri-Anne is the CEO of the Pirlangimpi Progress Association, but still finds the time in her busy life as mother and executive to help out at the Lodge. Her hospitality and friendliness is legendary.

Until recently Michael did most of his fishing and hunting at weekends, and over the years, and through his close association with the Tiwi People has built up a comprehensive knowledge of the area; its people customs and habitat. His knowledge of the area and how to fish it are also legendary, and his advice is much sought after by local and visitor alike. Michael's culinary skills are widely known, and he is particularly adept at serving the local "Harvest-From-The -Sea" in innovative and memorable ways.

David also has a long association with Pirlangimpi and the Tiwi people. David was born in Broome, a son of a Malay Pearl Diver who worked the pearl-rich waters off the Kimberley Coast.

David has also spent most of his life on the island, and from an early age has been hunting and gathering for food and for fun all over the twin islands of Bathurst and Melville. Few would know the area better, and David is also able to guide you to some memorable hunting spots where buffalo and pigs are common game.

David is married to a local girl, and is an active member of the Tiwi community. There have been many great guides at Munupi over the years, of whom Wayne "Buffalo" Ross is the undisputed doyen and acknowledged master. Winner of numerous Barra Classic's, Wayne no longer guides but fishes for pleasure and is still a frequent visitor to the Lodge.

On occasion, we fly in guides from the mainland. These are highly regarded professionals, well known in the industry, and dedicated to putting you onto fish and having a memorable experience.
